Distance Learning Distance education, or distance learning, is a field of education that primarily focuses on the adult learning/teaching style and techniques by using technological and instructional systems to deliver educational resources to students who are not physically “in class.” Instead of attending classes in person at a “brick-and-mortar” institution, class instructors and students may communicate on their own time by exchanging or relaying messages through an electronic medium, or through technological devices that allow them to communicate via real time by using the internet. Distance learning classes that require students to make a campus appearance for any reason, including the taking of exams, are considered to be a “quasi” or blended course of study. Online learning is quickly becoming one of the most researched and sought after experiences in today’s “internet” society. While “diploma mills” are becoming more identifiable and transparently illegitimate, accredited online institutions are becoming a viable and respected form of attaining higher education. Adults in today’s fast-paced environment are finding distance learning courses are convenient and cost-effective compared to actually attending class on a campus. Institutions are continually adding and creating online degrees and curriculum that are relevant for today’s working class. Although there will always be some areas of study which cannot be taught exclusively online, this accessibility and convenience has elevated online learning to the forefront of higher education in today’s society. Ivy League institutions and other prestigious universities are now scrambling to build online curriculum as they have recognized the necessity to compete with the leading universities in distance education. Distance education is beginning to change the mindset of how higher learning institutions have historically operated. In order to compete, they are changing enrollment processes to become much more customer-service orientated, offering individual counseling for the student from the time they inquire all the way through the online program.
